A rescued Nordet 420 brought back to life.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I was not looking for a Nordet 420. In fact, I did not even know what a Nordet was. I was looking for a Vaurien, the small sailing dinghy I remembered sailing with my father when I was young. I had found one in the Costa Brava: a fibreglass boat from the early 1980s that needed only a little work. The problem was simple: I had no trailer to bring it home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I called a friend who keeps an old warehouse and boatyard in the Pened\u00e8s, surrounded by vineyards and far from the coast. He specializes in wooden boat restorations, especially the Pat\u00ed Catal\u00e0, and I knew he had a trailer I might be able to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was early May. The fields were starting to explode with vegetation and flowers. In one corner of the yard, partly hidden under a tarp and overgrown with wildflowers, the wind lifted the cover just enough for me to see the transom of something dirty, forgotten and strangely interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I asked him about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He told me it was \u201ca 420\u201d that someone had brought to the yard fifteen years earlier and never claimed again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I asked if I could look under the tarp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I saw was not perfect. The boat was dusty, tired and clearly in need of work. But there was something in her lines, in the wooden details, in the quiet stubbornness of that abandoned hull, that made it impossible for me to ignore her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My friend asked if I wanted it. We agreed on a price, shook hands, and uncovered the boat properly. He offered to do the first necessary work to make her sail again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he went looking for the sails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were stored in a dark corner of the warehouse, covered in dust. I took them home without thinking too much about them. It was only later, when I opened the mainsail on my terrace, that the real search began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sail was not marked like a normal 420 sail. Instead, it carried a strange emblem: a sign I had never seen before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That small mark changed everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I started searching through sail insignia archives, but found nothing. I asked around in Facebook groups and different Spanish and English sailing forums. For a while I thought the boat might even be English. During those first searches I became interested in double-chine dinghies and found myself comparing stern shapes, even looking at photographs of the Enterprise class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, through one of those groups, a French sailor named Alain Tardif contacted me privately through the Dinghy Cruising Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He told me that what I had was the sail of a Nordet: a small French sailing dinghy designed in the mid-to-late 1950s by naval architect Fran\u00e7ois Sergent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That message changed the direction of the whole story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What had begun as the rescue of a forgotten dinghy became an adventure of discovery. I spent sleepless nights searching the web, reading forums, looking through archives and trying to find every trace of information I could. I began to search for the original bibliography: the magazines, articles and documents in which the boat had first been presented, tested and shown to the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then, slowly, something almost magical started to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was able to find and buy the period publications where the Nordet first appeared. The boat that had been sleeping under a tarp in a vineyard boatyard was no longer just an abandoned hull. She had a name, a designer, a history and a place within the story of French light sailing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is how Wildflower<\/em> began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not as a planned restoration. Not as a collector\u2019s project. But as a chance encounter with a forgotten boat, a sail emblem, and a trail of documents that led back to Fran\u00e7ois Sergent and the Nordet 420.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
