I was looking for a Vaurien, the small French dinghy I remembered sailing with my father when I was young. I had found one in the Costa Brava: a fibreglass boat from the early 1980s that seemed to need only a little work.

The problem was simple. I had no trailer to bring it home.

So I called a friend who keeps an old warehouse and boatyard in the Penedès, surrounded by vineyards and far from the coast. He restores wooden boats, especially the Patí Català, and I knew he had a trailer I might be able to use.

I drove up to see him in early May.

The fields were beginning to explode with spring vegetation. The edges of the yard were covered in green growth and flowers, and the place had that quiet inland feeling of a boatyard far from the sea: hulls, dust, timber, old gear, projects waiting for time.

In one corner of the yard, partly hidden under a tarp and overgrown with wildflowers, the wind lifted the cover just enough for me to see the transom of something dirty, forgotten and strangely interesting.

I asked him about it.

He told me it was “a 420” that someone had brought to the yard around fifteen years earlier and never claimed again.

I asked if I could look under the tarp.

What I saw was not a perfect boat. She was dusty, tired and clearly in need of work. But there was something in her lines, in the way she sat there, in the wooden details and the quiet stubbornness of that abandoned hull, that made it difficult for me to walk away.

My friend asked if I wanted her.

We agreed on a price, shook hands and uncovered the boat properly. She needed work, but he offered to do the first necessary repairs to make her sail again.

Then he went looking for the sails.

They were stored in a dark corner of the warehouse, covered in dust. I took them home without thinking too much about them. It was only later, when I opened the mainsail on my terrace, that the real search began.

The sail was not marked like a normal 420 sail.

Instead, it carried a strange emblem I had never seen before.

That small mark changed everything.

I started searching through sail insignia archives, but found nothing. I asked around in Facebook groups and different Spanish and English sailing forums. For a while I even thought the boat might be English. During those first searches I became interested in double-chine dinghies and found myself comparing stern shapes, looking at boats such as the Enterprise.

Then, through one of those groups, a French sailor named Alain Tardif contacted me privately through the Dinghy Cruising Association.

He told me that what I had was the sail of a Nordet: a small French sailing dinghy designed in the mid-to-late 1950s by naval architect François Sergent.

That message changed the direction of the whole story.

What had begun as the rescue of a forgotten dinghy became an adventure of discovery. I spent sleepless nights searching the web, reading forums, looking through archives and trying to find every trace of information I could. I began searching for the original bibliography: the magazines, articles and documents in which the boat had first been presented, tested and shown to the world.

Slowly, something almost magical started to happen.

I found references. Then photographs. Then articles. Then original publications. The boat that had been sleeping under a tarp in a vineyard boatyard was no longer just an abandoned hull. She had a name, a designer, a history and a place within the story of French light sailing.

That is how Wildflower began.

Why she is called Wildflower

The name came naturally, for two reasons.

The first was the way I found her.

She was not sitting polished in a marina or advertised as a rare classic dinghy. She was inland, far from the coast, covered in a tarp and surrounded by spring growth. Wild plants and flowers had grown around her while she waited, forgotten, for someone to notice her again.

The second reason came from a song.

Around the same time, when I had begun looking for a small boat, Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers” kept appearing in my playlists. The song seemed to follow the search. Its feeling of escape, belonging, love and freedom became strangely attached to the idea of finding a boat.

One line in particular stayed with me: “a boat out at sea.”

That was exactly what I was looking for.

Not only a boat, but a way back to something simple: wind, water, memory, family, childhood, and the kind of sailing that does not need to prove anything.

So the name was already there before I fully understood it.

She was found among wildflowers.

And she belonged on a boat out at sea.

From forgotten boat to living archive

At first, Wildflower was only a small restoration project.

Then the sail emblem led to the Nordet. The Nordet led to François Sergent. François Sergent led to the plans in La Rochelle, to old French magazines, to Marine Service, to CNSO, to period articles, and to a much larger story than I expected to find.

This website grew from that search.

It is not only about my boat. It is about the Nordet 420 as a design, a class, a small piece of French sailing history and a forgotten dinghy culture that deserves to be remembered.

Wildflower is the beginning of the story.

The archive is what followed.

The chance discovery of a forgotten Nordet 420 I was not looking for a Nordet.
